Come over the hills my bonny Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the road love and I'll make a vow
That I'll be your true love forever

Chorus:
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any

It's down in Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars, they were shining
For the moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she said she'd be my love forever

Chorus

It's not for the parting with my sister Kate
It's not for the grief of my mother
It's all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever

  • I grieved when Tom Clancy died, I ached when they buried Patty Clancy to the sounds of "Go Lassie Go". The loss of Tommy Makem was a loss to the world and a vacuum in Irish music. God Bless them all. God Bless you Liam.

  • This is so beautiful. Tune of "Loch Lomond." I love Tommy's deep voice, and he has so much expression in it.

  • red is my heart for you tommy and co

  • Music and words do not get more beautiful than this. What a gift Tommy Makem left behind for the world -his body of recorded work. His voice was so beautiful, his musicianship so superb, and his gift for speaking words was God given. He could speak words or sing them, and move your soul and your heart. Rest in Peace and Thank You, for the beautiful music and the elegantly spoken words.

  • i'm proud to have blood as green as the emerald isle running through my veins!

  • Amazing. Absolutely amazing

  • Thank you for posting this song :-)

My Dad used to sing this song to my Mum (except for the last stanza)....a very long time ago. A piper played the tune at his funeral. *sighs*

Thank you Lord, for sharing Tommy Makem with us...he brought joy to many!
