Richie Havens plays 'Handouts in the Rain' at the 2008 Rhythm Festival, Twinwood Arena, near Bedford, UK, Sunday evening 31st August 2008. Weekend weather was great until Richie started his set. Perhaps singing this song wasn't such a good idea after all or was it just that the weather wanted to join in and add atmosphere to the song? The power of music, eh? Note the brolly going up next to me during the number. Water was seen being swept off the stage in large quantities shortly after Richie's act, but it was too late in the festival to ruin the weekend, as has often happened at Glasto or to wreak the sort of havoc that the Woodstock festival experienced all those years ago when Richie Havens became internationally known. Great set despite the weather. Sorry about the unsteadiness in places - I was surrounded by brollies and getting very wet! Breakin' picks & breakin' hearts- Breakin' up, breakin' apart
Breakin' ground, I'm still bound ... the rocks ... playin' for Handouts in the rain
In the folk tradition I offer a verse of my own (not the song or the artist needs it) "Handouts in The Rain"

What a wonderful, soulful artist. I saw Richie Havens at an outdoor concert in 1994 and he brought tears to my eyes. 5*****

Funny story. I'm actually 30 and saw Richie for the first time yesterday in Paris. He still breaks picks !!
But what a songwriter / performer, man... .
I was very happy to see that 50% of the audience was between 18 and 35 !

Wow thanks for posting that. I remember the first time I saw him, it was 1968 I was 14 my brother and some of his friends took me along to Durham N.C. from Charlotte. got right up front on the floor.... He lost one of his picks and I picked it up... LOL I wonder what ever happened to that thing!
