all you need are horns and music in the world

Horn is a REALLY frustrating instrument to learn, especially coming off after another instrument like trombone. I've heard a lot of times that it's the hardest wind instrument... and I think that's because SO much of it depends on the curvature of your mouth. Especially on high notes... High F, A, and G are all open and thumb key fingering... so the same fingering, but different mouth curvature.

I never am tired of hearing the amazing low horn work. Everyone plays high, but to play well in the basement is quite a talent...

@klo1024 I admire Sarah's talent very much and imagine that she could probably play first chair in any other orchestra. She might have already had other offers, but is doing what she loves and does best. (and after playing the Berlin Philharmonic a person might consider any other a let down) In my opinion she is #1 in the world at playing the 4th horn position.

@AvengingSoul91 Radek and Stefan are both excellent players but I was pleased to see him get the first chair for this piece. I understand that he now has left the Berlin orchestra for other oportunities.

Playing this with the Middle Tennessee State University Horn Ensemble. So much fun!
-
@neferiel I haven't found it too challenging to play, personally. Having come off Trumpet, that gave me a position that was naturally disposed to high playing, which has made quite some difference. Trombone will probably mean you have a lower lip position.

@Mozart3150 This piece is available on the "Take 9" CD from the New York Phil and American Horn Quartet
-
@DenmarkPrinceof144 First horn player in this piece is Radek Baborak

STEFAN DOHR RULES !!!!
-
I think Sarah Willis is a more talented player than Stefan Dohr but don't tell anyone...
-
@neferiel Yes...! My solo this year had a high a trill from high F to high G... talk about mouth curvature!
-
wow! who new you could play so low? Willis is DEFINITELY one of the best at it!
-
2 people missed the like button.
-
@elpis128 I think its Stefan. it doesn't really matter in an ensemble like this one though.
-
@elpis128 I think its Stefan.
-
may i know who is the first horn player?
-
@neferiel there are alternate fingerings
-
@neferiel That's precisely the reason for practising... Do you think those hornists in the videos got to play that well within a snap of their fingers? And I don't think of horn as a frustating instrument, rather, it's a challenging instrument. It forces you to practise and the results are a mystery because it's different for everyone, and it tempts me to get better.
-
@hymmez0 thats also because of the laquered and unlaquered horns.
-
here you really can hear the difference between radek's and dohr's tone quality...
i like radek's more...i guess.it's more dark and inviting.
BUT both are still the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~

@Mozart3150
I don't think this one is available on CD/DVD unfortunately. There is, however, a CD by the Berlin Philharmonic Horn Ensemble, called "OPERA!" .
