@drkarnov I mean even though they can move there sorobans "sooo fast" according to the fool commentating, there is still 4 places of numbers. thats at least 4 movements. times by 10 for 10 numbers, and you have 40 movements in 3 seconds. That is BS
@drkarnov and 2 by 3's in under a minute (mentally). What the fuck is up with the speed?? you still have to move those bullshit wooden things around, so what the fuck? its really pissing me off. I can do way more advanced and complicated math that this BS in my head. but no way in hell can i add numbers that fast?? not that i care to do that because it isnt worth much, but really, wtf?
@drkarnov You seem familiar with soroban. Cool, i can see how using them help you with math. its visual, it has no number forms, anything new you can add to math like that can help you interpret math differently and more effectively. But i watched the video on soroban with 63,000 views or so, titled ALL IN YOUR MIND. what the fuck? they shoot of ten 4-digit numbers in 3 seconds. what the hell does this have to do with sorobon? I can calculate 2 by 2 multiplication in under 10 seconds,
@drkarnov we are talking about 2 different things. I'm talking about "fast part" thinking = math, and you are talking about "the way of thinking" = nothing to do with math. So as you said.. if you will be uber good calculator it won't increase your mental ability to see things differently.. but it will increase your speed = how fast you will be able to pick up differences. The bitch is in the details. I'm afraid I don't know Eduard Kummer but I do know quite a bit about brains =)) be happy!
@drkarnov "being a good mathematician has nothing to do with the fact of being a good calculator" - this is what is totally wrong. I don't give a shit about your famous anecdotes learn the facts first. Buy a book about human brains and learn how calculations affect your brain power. So yea, if you're a good calculator you are ALSO a better mathematician. I don't have to admit anything.. It's already proven. It's not a theory.. it's a fact.
@Grcar57 wow, wow, easy (asshole) man. It seems that you have something personal on this. What I said is totally logical, and more important, it is absolutely true, no matter if you want to admit it or not, which by the way, I don't give a shit.
I encourage people to learn soroban, I myself have a couple of them, but again, being a good mathematician has nothing to do with being a good calculator. Obviously you don't know the famous anecdote about Ernst Eduard Kummer.
@drkarnov And I'm sad that you can't see the big picture here. I hope you're not the next school minister in your country.. poor kids. "interesting instrument" .. do you really have to be an artist to notice a well made picture? Obviously, yes..
@drkarnov Either that, or you just don't know how calculating affects your brains.. in either case, you are covering your eyes from the truth. Modern math algorithms are being replaced every year. This method is one of the oldest and is still present = again for a reason. Some old civilization had much more knowledge then we have and it would be wise if you would not just seek excuses, and better try to learn something from them. Sorry, but I can't let your stupidity to affect others..
@drkarnov Increasing brain power by calculating faster also improves other math areas.. so fact is.. if you handle soroban well, you will be overall better in math for at least 5 %. So stop comfort yourself and others by selling bullshit. You see, you can't call someone mathematician if he will calculate something right, but need 2 hours for it. Math tests have limited amount of time to solve for a reason. Logic is also one area of the math, and it seems you're lacking it.
The abacus, and specifically, the soroban, is a very interesting instrument, but, being a good mathematician has nothing to do with the fact of being a good calculator. I say that because they seem to imply that if you are a good soroban user, you will be at maths, and that is absolutely false. You can be a disaster with arithmetics and still be a brilliant mathematician.
