1st person view of pertussis (whooping cough)

So i got this about 2 weeks ago.
Finally went to the doctor 2 days ago.
Got the test done, i am now to stay home for a week.... gunna miss my job of 4 years with almost no days missed.
And just started a new job that I have to call off my first 2 weeks of work.

On some drugs to help fight it so we will see.

Pretty much, you cough and cough so much you can't breath, also in my case to the point of dry heaving, i puked 3 times now, also one caused me to black out, and my eyes water so bad during these bad points.


This was taken at about 7am 08-22-10, I didn't bother turning on bathrom light, but no point in you seeing the huge pile of goo that was put in the can from doing this 6 hours straight. I finally cheated with nightquil, NOT SUPPOSE to do this...... but I hadn't had ANY sleep.....

I'm just now getting over this. I had it most of last month. My throat still feels a little fuzzy, but I'm not having those bad coughs. I just found out about this. I had a subconjunctival hemorrhage. This shit sucks ass, I hope I don't get this ever again I hope no one gets this. My mother and my sister have it too, we got it from my sister.

Prob one of the worst things i ever had happen.

Makes it works is it lasts forever.

Wow you sound just like me. I was just diagnosed with Pertussis. It's horrible. I have all the symptoms you mention in the description. I've had it for 3 weeks so far. The first time I went to the doctor, they said I had Bronchitis. They were wrong. There are a few times throughout the day that I can't breath for 30 seconds or more. Just gasping for air and coughing. Very scary. I just have to wait it out for another month or two.

@lizsurfingthechaos Yeah for me it was the start of a minor "outbreak" in southern cali and in central texas (at the same time) so when they said it was bronchitis, i told them i wanted to get tested for pertussis, glad i had it done then and there.

Just do your best to keep on with your life, once you get on the meds you can go back to work and stuff, just coughing alot so everyone stares :D

Oh just a full update, took over 3 full months to 100% quit doing random coughs from this.

After month 2 it was pretty much gone, but every few days i have like 30secs of coughing

@mjndblain I wouldn't say its HARD to cough, it is very easy cause you can't even stop it.

It HURTS sooo bad now.... on my 4th week of it... Even time I even do a tiny little cough i wanna die from the pain.

Week 4: and having 1 coughing fit once a day, still puke when i do it though, lots of phlem coming up still but with small double coughs)

@viper19861986 Thanks. People definitely stare. There have been some recent cases of it here in Portland, OR and so yesterday when I went to be tested they had me wear a surgical mask over my face. I got tested and they called me with the results earlier today. I knew it was something far worse than the common cold or even Bronchitis. The coughing spells are unbearable at times. Thank goodness I'm getting a little better each day though. I've only had 3 or 4 bad coughing spells today.

OMG! I feel for you, mate! I got this last December while visiting Orlando with my husband (great holiday, NOT!) 3 weeks of snuffling, coughing, gagging, retching. We're now back in Australia and I'm STILL getting coughing episodes! It truly is a horrible illness. :( I hope you recovered fully.
