making 3inch spherical ice cubes.
why ?
largest volume of ice with the smallest surface area reduces watering down your drink.
plus it looks cool.
This was made from :
6inch round aluminum stock convex cut on the metal lathe using my own custom made tool.
0.5inch stainless steel pins rounded on the metal lathe.
cnc milled for the pins and teflon inserts.
all this was done at the techshop where they have great dangerous tools for us average folks to use.
great learning project for me to get started using the cnc mill and metal lathe.
correct, the mold is at room temp in the video and the video is real time(ie not sped up). It took about 90 secs. The ideal ice chunk would be a little over 3 inch and it would be faster.
The chunk of ice in the video is about 4inches x 5inches
I also discovered that by putting the mold under hot water from the kitchen sink for about 30 seconds the mold get very hot in that short amount of time.

I recently met the maker of this mold. It was at room temperature. He got the idea from japanese bartenders making ice spheres, as they have less surface area, and therefore do not dilute the drink as much.

Incredibly cool! How did you come up with the concept?
The molds are at room temperature when this was done, correct?
