I guess I'm in the minority here. I didn't like Mary Bryant at all. She was a liar, a thief, a manipulator, who prostituted herself to get what she wanted. She was the most selfish of all the characters! If I were her, I would have either stayed with Clarke, who promised that no harm would come to her or her children, or, when caught, begged for my children to stay with the Dutch couple, knowing that the passage back to England could kill them. I hope the bonnet she stole was worth it!

thanks so much for uploading this!!

@ peacedesertrose ... thank you for that clarification. So whether Will died by being shot or by getting sick it's still so sad that she returned to England in worse shape than when she left b/c she had an emptiness in her heart from her great loss. I think it's sad that in those days being poor and having to beg for food was a crime. Thanks again!

@karajaneemostoller Its loosely based on a true story, In reality Will wasn't shot, he got sick and died like her children going back to England. And Clarke is a fictional character. I think Clarke meant that she didn't know his position and what he was capable of.

Great movie! I cried from the time Will got shot clear to the end! Was this supposed to be based off of a true story? There was one thing I didn't understand. What did Clarke mean when he said you don't know who I am? I must have missed something because I didn't understand that. Can anyone clue me in?

@Drunkkid69 It costs a buck o nine Drunkid69...we all need to chip in
Actually the part about Lieut Clarke deviates from the true story. Clark was the actual name of the SECOND lieutenant on board the ship and his wife died in childbirth. If Liet. Clarke were a real person, I would agree. Will, by the way died on the return ship to England not by the hands of a Lieut. Clarke according to the history. Forgive me if the history book is incorrect!

*Sigh* Stupid Clarke. Not an evil man, but certainly a stupid, jealous fool.
