On May 13, 2011 @ 9:19 P.M. local time, a magnitude 2.5 earthquake ocurred about 6 miles below the city of Carson, CA. This earthquake was recorded on a nearby high density seismic array in Long Beach, CA. The following time lapse movie shows the resulting ground motion as it moves across the Long Beach seismic array consisting of 5,300 stations nominally spaced about 330 feet apart.

  • Yes, these sensors are vertical component. When do you want them in Seattle?

  • There is a very accurate time break - the nodes are synchronized with GPS to about 25 microseconds.

  • One of the cool things about this video is that you can see the interference caused by the Newport-Inglewood fault which runs generally from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the image
