- In 2009 Lee Ballenger returned from a fact-finding trip to Guatemala as a delegate of the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission. The delegation met with leading economists, church leaders, deportees from the U.S. and human rights activists. The focus of the group was to research the effects of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) on the economy of Guatemala and on its citizens.
- In 1994 was signed NAFTA by a democrat, Bill Clinton. This same president then in 1996 signed The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 with the infamous 287g program. Surprisingly in 1996 with The Olympics in Atlanta the borders were wide open to labors to built the facilities.
Then, a republican president, George W. Bush signed CAFTA. The republicans had control of the House, Senate and the White House and still failed to pass a comprehensive immigration law.
Behind the unwillingness to solve the broken immigration system in the USA there are powerful interests in keeping the "status quo". Like in Egypt in the USA real changes only will be a reality when the people start taking responsibility for their own destiny.
Those who expect changes from government (local, state and federal) are facing painful denial. Until then...
