This is a clip of Higa Yuchoku performing Matsumura Passai. This version is also known as Tawada Passai. It is being performed at the openibg of Shuri Castle in 1992. This was a little more than a year before the passing of this great Master. Although you can tell that his health is failing, he proves that you can practice the art for your entire life.

  • Those who put thumbs down on this video are truly very disrespectful, malicious and ignorant. Higa Yuchoku Sensei is a true MASTER and a glory of Okinawan Karate Do. I do not belong to his school but to Shorinryu Shidokan in Argentina.

    EXCELLENT, thanks for posting!

  • this is great. i can't believe someone came on here and gave all the good comments thumbs down, as well as rating the video only two stars. There are truly ignorant, malicious and heavily disrespectful people on Youtube. It's saddening.

  • @hellothereitsjustme i thot the ryu were all the same...........also this does look to be a hard style compared to most styles...........if you were to look at all styles of marshall arts from hard to soft

  • @philotaaveti traditional Shorin-ryu is not/should not be "hard". Goju-ryu is quite hard but Shorin-ryu is not...relaxation is really important.

  • I know I'm a sensitive soul but I have tears in my eyes knowing that people have had the nerve to "thumbs down" this man. He was a very important man to my chief instructor Arakaki Isamu Sensei and Arakaki Sensei is very important to me. Therefore Higa Yuckoku Sensei is very important to me, too. He was a great man and had he not taught my sensei, Shorin-ryu would not have been passed to me and my senseis. I have much to thank this man for because Shorin-ryu is a big part of my life.

  • I can't believe people have given this video thumbs down. Do they not know who this man is? He was the teacher of many great teachers...Higa Minoru sensei, Arakaki Isamu Sensei...He was the uchi desu of Choshin Chibana sensei, the founder of Shorin-ryu! Funakoshi Gichin sensei trained in Shorin-ryu and it was he who was responsible for the spread karate to the western world. People shouldn't disrespect Higa or his style. He influenced many of the modern styles westerners train in.

  • "The young masters are respected. The old masters are venerated." I remember the quote but not the source

  • @NewEnglandBudo Excellently put!

  • @GojuBob Hi Bob, its just the Circle of Life.

  • What we are seeing here is someone who is physically feeble but spiritually/mentally undefeated. In other words: he's giving us a TRUE karate lesson.

  • im not really getting these thumb down for this video.. its very disrespectful and id like to see you in his age performing kata like this...

Anyway seeing kata performed in that way makes me think about it differently and could be very helpful in understanding it.. but lets practice and leave talking.
