Here is a tool I made to explore the gapminder dataset using the kinect. I am a huge fan of Hans Rosling's TED talk about the data of countries development. Recently for the BBC he made a fake augmented reality video with his dataset and since then I have wanted to make a realtime version of it.

Hope you enjoy it !

This was made possible thanks to two open efforts : the open source driver for the kinect, libfreenect and the open data effort of Hans Rosling who offers his dataset for download.

Oh, by the way, I am a freelance developer doing augmented reality and computer vision: http://iv-devs.com/

  • excellent the 666 .number . The NOW is not far away..

  • @gabriel1989tanger Hahaha ! I did not realize it was making a 666 ! well seen !

  • Now if we could put in our own data and put in a beta download that would be amazing. That is something I know I would use for class and other presentations. I can't wait for what the future has in store

  • @EPICxSWAGGER It is actually simple to change the data used. Right now I am using the .csv version of files provided by the gapminder project. CSV is a simple file format that almost all spreadsheets can output. You just have to give the file name and specify if you want a log scale or not. If you know some people that would be interested in this software please let me know !

  • If you could do it with the same look as he, it would be awesome.

    But great work.

  • @Filaipus Yes, the GUI definitely needs some polish to have a nifty look. Actually I am using a nice combination of OpenGL + Qt in this project so I have a lot of options to make nice effects. I should also wear a suit and talk :-) But I fear I am not as competent a speaker as Hans Rosling is...

  • Excellent !! Genius

  • Great work! I was trying to figure out how they made that video and wondering if the technology were capable of doing it real-time. Thanks for this!

  • @YvesQuemener I would love it for school and i know other people would love to use it. It would be extremely useful for classes and bonus marks for impressing the teachers

  • Bravo, Yves, c'est assez impressionnant ce que t'es arrivé à faire.

    Yann

  • @YvesQuemener Well, you never know if you dont try :D
