Levulon Blu Light Acne Treatment by Karl Swanson MD

Photodynamic therapy was originally developed for the treatment of cancer . In addition, Levulan® is able to shrink sebaceous glands, which also play a role in the cause of acne. Recent studies have shown that weekly treatments using topically applied Levulan® followed by light activation have resulted in remarkable improvement in the severity of patients' acne.

how much does it cost to do the blu light?....my mom doesnt want me to use accutane becuase the side effects so imma try to get this done

@kortinky you need read my question again. I didn't say levulan caused scars. I was asking if cosmetic surgery post levulan treatment is safe or not.

remember accutane shrinks sebaceous glands ALSO, so you can't have cosmetic surgery 1 yr post accutane treatment because of the risk of scarring, when sebaciuos glands are inactive.

Actually, ACNE causes scars. NOT Levulan. In addition, Levulan isn't surgery, it's a topical medication that does not have damaging effects like Accutane.

Remember Side Effects of Accutane: Acne flare-ups, Severe skin dryness, Hair thinning, Headaches, Hair loss, Thinning of the skin, making bruising and cuts more likely and slower to heal, Eczema, Fatigue, sensitivity to sunlight, Menstrual problems, Gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, Muscle pain, Skin conditions and infections

@moakleydakota I'm not sure where you found these trials, but you can clearly go to DUSA's website where they still develop Levulan for the treatment of Acne. Both myself and my brother went to Dr. Swanson for the Levulan Treatment. My acne was mild, but my brothers was severe. I only needed one treatment, whereas my brother received three. I was extremely pleased with my results, as was my brother. I dont know the science behind it, but i know it worked!!!

Dear Dr, Levulan was showin in phase 2 trials to not be any more effective than control. For this reason it was dropped. My question is, why are you and other doctors, including my own doctor, recommending this treatment for the treatment of acne if clinical trials showed it was ineffective?

Also if this shrinks and reduces sebaceous glands, does this put you at the same risk of scarring from cosmetic procedures that Accutane entails? Remember post accutane, 1 yr no cosmetic surgery!

On October 2008 Dusa Pharmaceuticals announced that it was no longer developing Levulan for the treatment of acne after the phase II results failed to show statistically significant results
