Jim Jeffries on changing his name

Did you know Jim Jeffries is really Jim Nugent? Or something like that. But when he did his first HBO special earlier this year, the Aussie stand-up comedian (who is based in the U.K.) had to change his name because AFTRA already had a Jim Jeffries on file. He went with Jim Jefferies, but hey, let him explain the process for you!

We spoke in Jim's hotel room in Chicago during Just For Laughs Chicago, June 17-21, 2009. This is one in a series of four segments for our hotel room chat.

He's also hosting one of the new episodes of Comedy Central's Live At Gotham, which tapes in August and will be broadcast later in 2009 or early 2010.

I had a similar issue when I went to join SAG back in the 90's. They were like, "Yours is taken, give me another name," Like it's that easy to just come up with a different name right on the spot. They contacted the guy who had a "similar" name (though not exact) and he was an old man who hadn't worked in 20 years, but refused to let me use my similar sounding name that didn't have an "s" on the end of it like his did. The whole thing was ridiculous. I never joined.

We have the same real name "Jeffries" This is funny because my ancestors changed the original spelling of my name YEARS ago when they came from Germany to the USA. We were "Jefferies" and they took out the extra E to make it "Jeffries" it's funny Jim is switching it back to what my original name could have been till this day when people try to spell my last name they ALWAYS add the extra E ! We should have just kept it lol
