I recently made a wallpaper with the companion cube and posted it to my website. You can find it here: http://www.twisted-artwork.de/portfolio/wallpaper/twisted-artwork_companion_c...

Just a few days later i received an email with some questions about how i made the cube. So i decided to make this video tutorial for everyone that is interested in modelling their own companion cube. This tutorial covers the modelling part. Texturing is not included. If someone wants a tutorial on that part i surely will do it.

Oh and for the record, the companion cube is not my own creation! It is a part of the game Portal.

  • I get lost at 4:19 could you give more detail??

  • @RoguePanther117 What exactly do you want to know? At that time i removed all those parts that are of the same form so that i have two "main" objects left. One object that will be equally formed at each corner and one object for the edges. That way i only have to edit those two objects and can copy them into place when i am done!

  • @TwistedArtwork The problem I am having is when I go to extrude the corner, when i extrude it all goes very wacky and does not extrude properly.

  • @RoguePanther117 Did you set the extrusion type to 'group'? Otherwise it might look weird... If you have and it still looks wrong, feel free to upload a screenshot somewhere and give me a link!

  • this is great i was thinking in make my own companion cube in MAX

    now i can, thanks

  • @xeonhl2 Yay, when youre done, post a result somewhere :)

  • @marceloramires Sorry for he delay!

Can you post a pic or a vid somewhere to show me he problem, i don exactly know what it could be...

  • @TwistedArtwork I've just done it this part, took me 20 minutes to figure out a safe way to do this.. copied, rotated and aligned it, the outcome had the same number of segments as yours (284), but after I weld it, I could not find a value that would leave it with 208, so I had to leave it at 222 or the haps between the corners and the sides would be ruined. Now I cannot apply "cap" for some reason, It isn't originally dark inside the corner one, it just gets dark after I cap the border :(

  • @marceloramires Sorry, i thought it would be straightforward! When you think its important to cover that part too, i will do anothert video or a text tutorial on my page.
