Scarriage Town Haunt
By D. Breezy
Paul Counelis is beyond addicted to Halloween, this night of mystical carnage that wreaks havoc on our already unsettled minds. But he's not the only one; we all seek out this guilty pleasure of entertainment, whether your choice be practical jokes, jumping out from behind a darkly lit spot and freaking the bajeebies out of your sister Nikki, watching scary movies, telling ghost stories or even riding roller coasters that flip us upside down and make us scream until we have no voice left, we all love a little scare. As the weary anticipation of fright hangs in the balance, our adrenaline pumps, and our hearts beat faster than we thought they could, without giving out altogether. We all harbor some love for a season tinged with the colors of ember, the sweet scent of fall leaves, chocolate covered treats and tricks that will make the faint hearted weep!!!
Paul has taken Halloween to another level of fright. Every year his yard has been adorned with more witches, skeletons, headstones, and many of the uncanny characters that haunt us when we fall asleep. In 2008, the yard ornaments turned into a mini haunt and it has steadily progressed into a bigger haunt and walkthrough, as of 2010. There are many fixtures intermingled with all sorts of living and non-living creatures, and as you enter Scarriage Town it is hard to tell which is a prop and who might move and devour or terrorize their next unwitting victim!!!!
D. Breezy: Who or what instilled you with your love for Halloween?
Paul Counelis: Many factors! Some fun childhood Halloween experiences, my mother, my grandparents, watching "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" with my dad...really just the magic of it all, and the very real way in which it's a holiday where the overall mood is manifested by nature, aside from the commercial aspect. I think it's unique in that way.
D.B: When did you get the idea to have a home haunt?
PC: Well, my wife and I started with small yard displays, but when the neighbor at the end of our street moved (he had the big Halloween house at the time), we decided that we would fill that void for the neighborhood kids, and also our own kids who are very interested in Halloween and Halloween related things.
D.B: Who are your accomplices?
PC: Really, much of my family and a bunch of our friends. We have a lot of help with this haunt, and more people become involved with it every year.
D.B: What is your favorite part of your haunt?
PC: TOO hard to answer. I'm really pleased with all of it,to be honest. We do have a pretty unique room that features a scene from the film "The Ring", with a girl (Emily Roda) climbing out of a floor TV with a well next to her, and she triggers the sounds and lights herself. That one goes over very well. My brother-in-law John and I have a "Freddy vs. Jason" scare where we turn on the crowd after fighting each other for a few seconds. That's a lot of fun.
D.B: Is it age appropriate?
PC: It's not super gory, so it really depends on the child in question. I wouldn't recommend kids under 7 or 8 in general. Some younger kids are braver than others.
D.B: Is there something for littler kids too?
PC: The front yard is decorated with much less edgy décor, and there aren't any real jump scares. Just candy, some spooky stuff, and smiles.
D.B: What other kind of arts do you dabble in?
PC: Well, I'm in a few bands, and I write for different publications like Rue Morgue Magazine and Flint Comix. We also make short films, some of them associated with Halloween.
Halloween will be here in no time, beckoning our call into the dusky crisp night where goblins lurk and candy calls, treats are had and tricks are worst. Don't let just anyone scare you; if you must be freaked, do it intentionally. See what fun can be had, bring your mom, bring your dad, bring your uncles and your aunts. There's screams to be had, just take a step, open your door, and enter the treat that has waited all year.
Thanks!
