What you wanted to know about clutches but were afraid to ask.

I'm putting a ACT MB1-XTSS on the car in this video. Step height, clutch dowell pins, bolt part numbers, alignment and various clutch parts are described in this video. It's part of an all-inclusive drivetrain tech piece I'm working on that's broken up into sections to maintain focus on the individual processes involved.

  • question? does my car has to be in neutral to do this? or dont matter

  • @SuperFlacoboy When? When you're putting the transmission back in the car? If so, that can help during that part... The end of the shaft is rounded, and the clutch disc's splines are chamfered. It's usually pretty easy either way. There's nothing holding the crank still, nor are there any axles in it; but when it's fighting you, it's better to take every precaution that could make your life easier. You won't hurt anything...

  • That machinist strait edge is a limp dick, how do you expect to get good measurements with that.

  • @TheMechanicalGuy There's actually nothing scientific about measuring an ACT clutch pressure plate on a DSM. I was just illustrating that's how they break in. The pressure plate on this car has less than 500 miles on it and is already concave. I have one that's got 40,000 miles on it that looks just the same and is burnt to crap. They all do it, but there's no "in-spec" measurement for it on these cars.

And yes, I agree with you. It's just a plain-old ruler.

  • @Jafromobile I see what you are saying. That makes me question my consideration for the Fidanza 4.3 because it only comes in a 6 puck design and I sure don't want to be damaging my Shep Stage III. Do you think 11's are possible on your setup on pump gas? That is ultimately my goal and I feel like I need to get every little extra HP I can to do so.

  • @MichaelCosta84 A lot of people think it can do 11's because I've hit a high mph of 118, but so far I've been unable to beat a 12.20. Perhaps all it will take is a little tail-wind, though.

During last year's stage 2.5 TRE trans replacement, I added coil-on-plug with a CDI, 1g TB and a Magnus intake manifold. It actually slowed me down. I've been out-of-fuel with 121% duty cycle ever since. RC550's are too small. I have multiple solutions for that in the works. :)

  • @Jafromobile thank you coz im thinkin to do it myself

  • Hey Jafro, I had a similar clutch problem and ended up taking it to the shop. My mechanic claims the clutch I gave him to install was bad and now it runs but wont go into gear easy like it should. It also wants to move forward when you do get it in without giving gas. Oh and my clutch and plate that I gave him to put in had less than 5k miles on them and look like yours. Any clue to whats wrong? or is the mechanic right?

    Thanks!

  • i think your info is a little wrong with your burned clutch. what happens is heat makes the metal really hard and those bubbles and colored spots are called hard spots which causes uneven wear on both the pressure plate and the clutch disk

  • Man I am learning a ton from your videos I was wondering if you could help me out with something

  • @jafromobile - another great video!
