FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Good
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Good Good Good Acceptable Good Good

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Lexus GS was redesigned for the 1998 model year. All 1999 and later GS models manufactured after November 1998 include structural changes to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. (note: information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on or near the driver door).

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated the crashworthiness of a GS 400 with the structural changes in a 40 mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the roof rail.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the left knee indicate that injuries to the knee would be possible. Head acceleration from roof rail hit was low.

  • How fast was the car going?

  • @rrrandommman I ended up running front 'race' springs for a 318is on Bilstein shocks as the motor is a similar weight, it feels great now, after I first did it the suspension was soft up from because the 325i springs were suited to the heavier 325i Iron block engine.

  • @JZZ31 Tedious indeed, but do tell me how the 1UZFE feels in a 3 Series. It's a light weight engine, so it could work well. Do you have to set up the suspension to reflect that of the 335? Best of luck.

  • @rrrandommman I agree. Oddly enough I've been working on a project for a few months where I've mixed the best of both worlds, a 3 series coupe body with a Lexus V8 engine. A nice combination - although a tedious expensive exercise!

  • @JZZ31 Well said, I agree, I prefer the BMWs, however, at this point I can't afford the more expencive running cost of a BMW and considering what you do get in a Lexus for a much lower price, the engineering and over all feel of them is quite a lovely comprimise. Has anyone told E320fan that Lexus have a totaly different body to the toyota equivilent model, down to the drive train, engine and steel construction? hehe.

  • Very safe and much better then the same era Mercedes E-Class

  • THIS 98-05

  • Lmao wow that crash test dummy looks so funny just plowing down in that airbag and off in slow mo

  • @902120 Yup and they are great looking stock wheels... thins are diff these days... you looking at a grand are 2 for the optional wheels on current cars. . .

  • @Toyota4Life Can you believe that it cost only $215 extra for the optional 17" wheels?! Talk about a bargain!
