@nocternalD : absolutely right. Canada tends to be very hesitant about embracing something that has not "traditionally' been thought of as part of the national fabric. As a result you get pockets of greatness, but without a full national effort behind it – like funding from coast to coast to coast, and vision – it's never enough to create a single great entity of development; like, for example the hockey programme, which is so completely well developed and understood. But this is changing.
@sirjohneh canada is a very strange place when it comes to football players, theres a shitload of talent waiting to be unleashed but there very small avenues for people to go into. There are many immgrants in canada who love football (many Potugesee people it seems) but there is in Canada in terms of going proffesional is Toronto FC. Canada needs more teams in the MLS and needs to strike some deals with some european teams to have some youth teams going
@nocternalD : ah, don't know a lot about Jonathan; I can't say I would argue with someone having the opportunity to play with a team with a fighting chance to win a world cup.
Having said that, at some point, more calibre players like Julian need to focus their efforts on Canadian team development; and as they are increasingly removed from the old world by many generations, this will inevitably become a reality.
@nocternalD : "let's face it"? are you serious? JDG spent the whole interview talking about being proud of his city – Toronto – and supporting his country – Canada – he speaks completely with a Canadian accent and has clearly spent his life here in Canada; at what time do you see "Jamaican" or anything else in any of this?
I dont know what North Americans take the beautiful game for with some of the teams that they use like assist, and others and now the latest one designated player what the fuck is that? This why I dont watch the MLS they are trying to change the way the sport have been call for many centuries, this is the real football stop trying to change it, and as for the NFL that should be call the National Handball League, but too bad we have a NHL already, just call the game for what it is please!!
