Controlled depth fishing is where you have a knot on your line such as the UNI-KNOT. I just cut the line the depth I want to fish then re-connect the line with a UNI-KNOT, My preference is 20 feet, add a bead, A swivel then your leader or however you would like your line rigged the purpose of the bead is to make sure your float goes no further than the knot in your line. My Father taught me how to use this method for catching Blue Catfish and Redfish in a Stocked Lake although he sometimes uses a 20 ounce plastic soda bottle for his float. Some fishermen use this method while drifting in a boat this way they can have a couple of fishing rods with lines right off the boat and a couple more lines further away from the boat during the drift. This video demonstrates how to make and set up a Controlled Depth Float.

  • if you leave tag ends on your uni knot to stop the top bead surely it will get caught on your line guides during casting...?

  • @12alien12 Nope it may flick the eyes on the way out but im not usin 120 Lb test line. that would be the only thiong that may make it snag. Been using this method for many years with no problems.

  • what are the beads for....i dont understand the purpose of this why dont u just put on the weight and let it fall to the ground?...sorry im a beginner

  • The bottom bead is to protect the line from the lead banging on the swivel.

The top bead is to stop the line at the knot.

    Hope that helps

  • @redsbleeding2003 The weights are made of heavy lead and if that bangs into the metal swivel it will cut the soft nylon lines. thus the bead is a buffer to keep this from hapenning.

  • thank you

  • thankyou

  • You can find a step by step to tying the sliding stop knot on this site

    pacgb.co.uk/tips/stopknot.html

  • Instead of cutting the line and tying a uni-knot , why not tie a sliding stop knot on the line instead. When you want to fish at a different depth, as you just slide the knot along the line to the new depth. This knot take only a few seconds to tie, and can be tied with either mono or powergum.
