Dave is so sick. Saw him play with herbie hancock and after the show shook his hand and I was like DUDE you were on bitches brew!! Asked him questions about his bass too. A class act and gentleman

Even though I am a youngster bass player in the world of Jazz, I am at the standard where I can play pretty much anything (within reason) and I just want to say this "God can you all shut up and stop analysing everything and stop nerding out and saying "oh yeh well this was composed because..... blah blah blah" and just enjoy the music?"

Absolutely. All the goofs talkin about race in Jazz are terrible wrong.
Just remember Django Reinhardt, a european Gypsy inspiring the Jazz scene in the States in the 30s. Was he black ? - No - Could he swing ? - Hell, he could. You see, an intelligent musician who loves and lives his instrument doesn't have to be black or white to play a certain kind of music. It's about hard work on yourself and on your instrument.

I don't know another bassplayer whos lines are as lyrical as Holland's. I couldn't sing stuff as cool as he plucks out on upright.

@blainethebassist (Cont...) Wagner, though he was a hateful man in many regards, never (to my knowledge) drew upon his hate when composing "Parsifal", or "Tristan," etc.
Ultimately love and hate are dichotomous. So I guess that makes this whole discussion moot to a certain extent. I guess it's just my optimistic side that believes that the love aspect moves people to action.

@blainethebassist: I think you were correct with your original statement, "good music never stemmed from hate." Penderecki composed his "Threnody" because of his love and empathy for the victims of Hiroshima. Though he hated the acts of war, love for his fellow man was the genesis. The same sort of argument could be applied to grunge and metal. Ligeti wasn't really an emotional composer. His was a love for theory. I don't think he ever viewed his music as "dark."
I didn't even realize until more than halfway through the solo that he was playing unaccompanied. His sense of time keeps the grove going strong even when he's soloing.

race has nothing to do with talent. your intelligence lacks. plus good music never stemmed from hate. your a douche. I hope you get some serious illness that makes it so you can't put ignorant comments on youtube that end up offending people who are actually worth conversing with about good music. stanley clarke, victor wooten, jaco pastorius, dave holland. All are amazing. not because of their skin, but their dedication to the instrument. This is proof racism isn't just whites to black.
