Bicycle Rush Hour Snow - Utrecht, Netherlands

The first snow of the winter of 2009/2010 and the Netherlands came to a grinding halt. Motorised traffic and the trains that is, not the cyclists. They kept on going as they always do.

Commuters going to work in the dark winter morning. Later on in the day we see more cyclists, a lot of whom are university students and school children.

Where is the snow this year?! We moved from California to Utrecht a few months ago and were hoping for our first ever white Christmas...maybe next year!

we didn't have a white christmas in about 40 years, then we had two in a row. This one was green again. As was to be expected. But the winter can still turn very cold until the end of February or even in March.

I'm going to study in Utrecht later this year. Which is interesting because I'm going to go from an Australian winter straight to a Dutch winter.

Bicycle lanes everywhere. Your city is much more enlightened than my city of Toronto. Where the car is God.

we don't wear helmets on bikes, Dutch people (myself included) find the idea of wearing a helmet on a normal bike ridiculous. you don't go fast so why would you need a helmet. But i think you're surprised because you are used to cycle on the same road as the cars. we don't do that here in Netherlands: because we have bicycle lanes everywhere, so cycling is safe.

The average figures don't say it all, of course. We had several days of -19C last winter, and last summer was at times quite hot for here, with +38C in places. But of course, cycling never stopped. On hot days, it can even be very nice to ride in the woods, in the shade, and get a bit of a breeze. Besides utitlity cycle paths, we also have very nice recreational paths here.

Looks really nice here in my country Costa Rica if you bonuses a bicycle for going to work good will get assaulted and maybe dead... And there is not cycling paths so maybe you will get hurt by a car.. What level Netherland... congratulations for such nice country....

It's always the same with the first big snowfall. Cycling commuters like me are mostly the only ones to arrive on time at work. The others, who travel by car and bus, are coming in too late on such days.

wow not a single mountain bike lol all were like schwinn old people's bicycle hahahaha if i were there i would rock the cyclist on my goped and eletric scooter which is for snow
