by Chuck Quinton and Alison Thietje - The truth behind this golf myth that is, unfortunately, still being taught by well known instructors. The myth states that you should grip the club based on how your hands naturally hang, ie. if your palms face your thighs, you should have a strong grip. Problem is, anatomy 101 tells us that NO ONES hands naturally face their thighs, it's simply a by product of poor posture!

Chuck: Yes I used to have my elbows rotated out at address because I wasn't retracting my shoulder blades. I tended to have a sore left elbow coming down the last few holes. I enjoyed your interview a few months ago with Fred Greene on the Golf Smarter podcast.
Thanks golfprogress, you're correct about posture. One of our Dr.'s on our medical panel believes that this setup myth is one of the causes of golfer's elbow as well. This myth can't die soon enough.
Chuck: Great observation of this myth. I've always believed that posture determines grip. If you have bad posture and have developed a grip that is comfortable, by definition you must have a bad grip. Scap stability is a huge issue that is ignored by most golf professionals. There is a lot of confusion around the idea of t-spine mobility, shoulder mobility, and scap stability.
