Turning a couple of children's toys from an Elm log using my hand lathe, the second toy made, is not shown at the end of the video as i still need to complete it. The Elm log used has been seasoning for a long long time and is drier than a desert inside, which is why i elected to turn these from an uncleaved piece of wood as i have no worries about then splitting at all, and if it does, i have an excuse to make some more

Other items shown at the end of the video are ferro rods with turned handles made from Ash and Elm , two turned mallets from Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), the "stick things" are called Spurtles and are a traditional Scottish stirring stick, normally used with Porridge.

This is a HAND POWERED LATHE per the video description below, if i had wanted a pole or other type of foot powered lathe i would have built one of those in the 1st place, the whole idea behind this lathe is it's HAND POWERED. Search YT for Bow Lathe and you will find another HAND POWERED lathe based on historical fact, in fact they are still used in some parts of the world to this day.

  • I know literally nothing about this. Do you have to pull back the tool while the lathe "rewinds" or can you apply pressure in both spinning directions? I can't see what you have that pulls the string up a branch or plank overhead?Looks like something even a knucklehead like me could build and would be fun to try. thanks

  • @truckpipe - yep the tool is retracted when the lathe back winds otherwise it will blunt the cutting edge, as the cut is made on the pull stroke only, to make it spin back, i have a small bungee in the roof of the shed im in, outside i use a small springy branch to do the job, it's very easy to build and operate

  • HA ha that is fantastic !! perfect for small projects. I have to build one, it will go great with my hand crank grinder !!. thanks for the video !

  • @ZEUKI1 - cheers man, tis a good little tool for small stuff like you say, let us know how the one with a hand crank goes if you build it

  • how long did it take to make those spinning tops??

    they are amazing!!

  • @banana62047 - thanks for the comment, i cant honestly remember how long they took, but i know it didnt take too long.

  • очень хорошее ручное приспособление

  • @TrionAlpha - thanks for the comment,

  • Seems like you could turn bowls with this provided you had enough patience. The tops look amazing by the way.

  • @artfx9 - i give up, no it wouldnt be easier to use my foot to push down on the string because it's a HAND POWERED lathe not a foot or leg powered lathe, a HAND POWERED lathe
