Yes, the design of this track is far away from reality (actually everything in the track isn't accurate). However, be aware that this version was created long before the first race took place in 2008. A new, much more accurate version should be coming up.

You want to see a video of me driving the lap then? :) Really, I'm not faking it. It would be pretty silly to fake a lap in a game and then pretend that I was driving it, right?

You can use the keyboard to drive, but this simulator is optimised for control using a steering wheel and pedals. It makes it much more realistic and gives you much more control.
The sim only works on a pc.
I also drove in the SingTel Motion Simulator (basically driving in a Formula 1 car which is mounted on a motion platform) in Singapore at the race - and, wow.. that makes it even better (and harder!).

... it's a big shame that the car doesn't suffer damage from hitting the wall though. That would make it much more realistic.

You can create your own folder inside the skins folder and then select the skin inside the game (on the file menu). Copy at least skin.png & TOYOTAF1skin_wings_001.png (from the f1/texture folder to your skin folder inside the skins folder), edit those and see how it works.
With regard to the laptime: it's a matter of finding the limit and then change the limit. Focus on where you can win time, try to learn the limits of the car and you'll see that there is a lot of time to be won.
