I went on a ramble to the small coastal Thai town of Sichon in search of a legendary Southern Thai speciality called "Khao Yam"- a salad made with cooked and cooled rice, plus fresh finely sliced lemongrass, lime leaves, powered dried shrimp, chili powder and bean sprouts with a salty, sweet and sour sauce made with wild lime leaves, wild limes, fish sauce and palm sugar. I met a friendly local man named "Mister Rungyot" who showed me where to get the best "Khao Yam" in the market. We talked for an hour about Thai food and had a great conversation. We then visited his family home and I met his 81-year-old Mother (who had given birth 11 kids in their tidy seaside home). When asked if my family knew I was safe, I asked if he would make a video for me to send home to assure my Mother that I was happy, safe and well fed (thanks to Mister Rungyot and his family). I love Thai people!
April 2010 - I met with Mister Rungyot again in Sichon - I had taken some photos of his mother and wanted to give her some prints as a present. She beamed with delight when I handed over the photos of her and seperate photos of Mister Rungyot. As a return present, she gave me a large bunch of bananas she had just harvested from her garden "so I wouldn't get hungry on the trip back to Koh Phangan." Thanks, Mother!
