I always saw Shelke as a character than helped Vincent realize he needed to move on, hence him leaving the cave to see her and smile a Vincent smile.
But, I didn't really see her as a romantic interest--I can't get over the nine-year-old body--but it's still very sweet.
The song fits perfectly.
