Each Norrbotten receives a raw chicken drumstick at around 4:45 every evening. You can set your clock by this feeding time as they start milling around to let us know they are ready for their treat. The raw bones keep their teeth pearly white. We buy the chicken drumsticks at the grocery store, 200 pounds at a time, so we try and watch for the sales! They eat their other food late in the evening but are not near as excited to do so. We used to feed the Miniature Pinscher a part of a raw chicken wing, but found that she was hiding them in various places of the back room, so decided she would have to forego the nightly raw meat feeding. Needless to say, she has to go in yearly to have her teeth cleaned. I have never had to take the Norrbottens in for a cleaning.

  • Hello, I don't start the raw drumsticks until they are 6 or 7 months old and then I start off with raw chicken wings until their teeth are strong enough to manage the drumstick bone. I feed a high quality holistic kibble also and those baby peeled carrots are their main treats except in training. Do you mind if I as who you are getting your puppy from? I usually know who has puppies and when they are ready to leave, but I am unaware of any that young right now. Just curious.

  • Yes, my inlaws visited Sweden a few years ago and I asked them to ask around about the Norrbottenspets. No one they talked to over there had ever heard of them. It is even more so over here. Everyone asks "What breed is that?" Their next comment is "What beautiful dogs!" Our dogs live on 15 acres of woods and fields and keep the squirrel, gopher, lizzard and mole population down to nothing. Even the deer are not allowed on our property. They are obsessed with hunting, as they should be!

  • I would love to see pictures of your six dogs. Do you live near the Norrbotten region of Sweden or have you ever visitied there?

  • Hello,

Thank you for the compliment. To answer your question, no they are not overly active. They need exercise like any dog, but are generally as active as their owners. Our dogs spend much of the day sleeping (they love the loveseat the best). They are definitely not energizer bunnies by any means. They are a hunting dog, but even more so, they are an excellent companion dog. Their hunting in the U.S. is pretty much confined to chasing squirrels up trees.

  • Yes, I am afraid so. We go through lots and lots of chicken drumsticks, not to mention their other dog food. Wonderful dogs. We live out in the country and they have 15 acres to play on.

  • Hi, I'm getting a Norrbotten puppy probably in a month or two. What kind of food are you feeding yours? other than raw chicken drumstick, do you feed them any dry dog food? Just wondering whether they are picky eaters or whether one type of dog food settles with them better than another? Thanks!

    They are beautiful dogs!!!

  • Really weird for me in Sweden to see these dogs outside of my country...they are not that common here either!

  • What a beautiful dogs you have. We have 6 and live in sweden that norrbottenspetsen come from.

  • beautiful dogs. .

Questions though, I've been considering getting one, and I'm wondering precisely how active you find them to be? I mean, do they go 24/7, or do they simply need a specific amount of exercise to be happy? And if those needs are met, can they chill out and lay around the house? Or are they energizer bunnies?

I've also read that they need a purpose to be content, like hunting or working?

  • All these dogs are your pets?
