What do you use to make the pen go up and down? I am building a similar system and my current pen movement needs improvement!

I am using solenoid to take it down, a spring moves it up , think i found it in another printer. Around 0:40 you can se another stepper motor, I use it as Z axis but it control simple micro switch thats conected to the solenoid :-D

is a homemade graphics printer, nothing more, although if you hightened the Z-axis and changed out the pen for a dremel, and changed from paper to wood, it would be a CNC machine.
