@newfieboy58 in the early days there were close dogfights

@LtNomad120mm Actually there was another reason he named it Bolo. The weapon looks at first glance like an ordinary tool for cutting foliage, so an enemy could be misled into thinking he was facing a relatively easy opponent, not realizing that Filipinos had also perfected it into a martial arts tool. That's pretty much the trick Olds was pulling with his Phantoms armed for air combat but pretending to be "easy meat" F-105s fighter-bombers.

@Blixer7 I understand about top gun but check out the making of it. They spoke with the military advisor for top gun, who was an ace from vietnam, that filming a realistic dogfight with jets is boring as hell to watch. The jets are so far apart that there's nothing to see on film. Even in this recreation for Olds, these planes were never that close. Like top gun, the history channel moved the planes closer together for dramatic effect. The making of top gun was good and funny too.

Critical difference between American and Vietnamese pilots: Our pilots were taught to think for themselves and react to any surprises that might come their way. The Mig pilots didn't have that flexibility, and it cost them dearly this day. Things happen so quickly in a dog fight, and you can't wait for the ground controllers to make up their minds as to what to do.

BOLO hehe ... jungle bolo what its really called, the counterpart of sabers and swords for filipino warriors.
