Originally a poem by Rudyard Kipling turned to a song, this is an acapella rendition of Oak and Ash and Thorn. Seemed an appropriate song to upload on Beltane/May Day and I hope you enjoy it :)

My other channel is http://youtube.com/geordieraised which is for covers of modern songs. This channel will be dedicated to folk songs.

Lyrics/Words (SING ALONG!! :) ):

Of all the trees that grow so fair, old England to adorn,
Greater are none beneath the sun than Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn good sirs, All on a midsummer's morn. Surely we sing of no little thing In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn.

Oak of the clay lived many a day o'er ever Aeneas began
Ash of the loam was a lady at home when Brut was an outlaw man,
And Thorn of the down saw new Troy town, from which was London born
Witness hereby the ancient try of Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing . . .
Yew that is old, in churchyard mould, he breedeth a mighty bow
Alder for shoes do wise men choose, and Beech for cups also
But when you have killed, and you bowl it is filled, and your shoes are clean outworn
Back you must speed for all that you need to Oak, and Ash, and Thorn Sing . . .

Elm, she hates mankind, and waits till every gust be laid,
To drop a limb on the head of him that anyway trusts her shade,
But whether a lad be sober or sad, or mellow with ale from the
horn,
He'll taketh no wrong when he lyeth along 'neath Oak, and Ash, and Thorn Sing . . .

Oh, do not tell the priest our plight, or he would call it a sin,
But we've been out in the woods all night, a-conjuring summer in,
And we bring you good news by word of mouth, good news for cattle and corn
Now is the sun come up from the south, by Oak, and Ash, and Thorn. Sing . . .

  • Oh my Gods that was amazing! :) Personally I like the fast versions but your voice is beautiful and clear and I really liked it.

(Just on a side note... it is spelt Phoenix XP)

  • @pansarblack lol thanks for the comment - I agree the fast versions are wicked! and on the side note - yes I know how to spell phoenix =P however, the name was already taken and after thinking about it I decided I liked the imperfect spelling as a representation of my own imperfections, which of course, help to make up who I am =)

  • Absolutely lovely. Your voice has such a natural richness to it...beautiful :)

  • @Spencerdoken thank you, means so much when people take the time to comment! Especially when I just put this up as a reference as I found other covers a bit on the fast side :) thanks

  • Catchy just with the voice. Now hunt up a few musicians to back you up and you'll be the Queen of the festival.

  • @zboston3 I wish! One of the drawbacks to being a social recluse ;) thanks for the comment :D

  • @InkPheonix Well, reference or not, it's lovely :) Also, it's wonderful to hear such a good singer using a range other than soprano.

  • I'm especially fond of the last line :)

  • @Sundragon457 thank you for stopping by and for the nice comment :-) glad you liked it!
