"Pale wooden blinds and floors" is very ambiguous. What is "pale?" That could be a light brown, white, almost anything that isn't DARK which most floors and blinds are not. Plus, most blinds are wooden, as are many floors. The room color was a lucky guess, the two mirrors was an easy one for a girl's room, as were the black and white photos. Having so many guesses receive a positive hit immediately makes the effect more impressive, but in reality it is a combination of luck and ambiguity.

I understand how the cold read works and I understood how it worked for the guy. the questions were very ambiguous and there are many children who had traumatic childhood experiences in water. the woman however, didn't really give him anymore info other than answering yes. he had to have some other knowledge about women's bedrooms in order to get every question right.

@philbio66 Basically Derren is just using a variant of cold reading. He starts off much like your typical cold reader by saying ambiguous things and reading the reaction of the target to get more specific. But then he gets much more specific and makes seemingly impossible deductions. All he is doing here is confident guesswork. There are probably a hundred people he has tried this on (or more) and he simply selected the best reads from the lot. Those he "misread" he simply does not show you.
