Television news mash-up of the top story on April 10, 2010: Dan Roth, former incumbent Sacramento councilmember Ray Tretheway's District Director (a.k.a. "Chief of Staff," in blue shirt), and Corin Choppin of Capitol Campaigns, Ray Tretheway's campaign management firm and husband to another of Tretheway's staff members (Randi Kay Stephens), caught in the act of tampering with campaign signs of his challenger, Angelique Ashby.
Ashby placed first in the three-way hotly contested Sacramento City Council race on June 8, 2010, winning more votes than incumbent and another challenger combined. She was sworn into office on November 23, 2010.
The extent to which this incident affected the ultimate outcome of the election may never be known, but most who followed the race agreed that the Tretheway campaign suffered a serious blow to its credibility and respectability and probably helped Ashby secure a victory in the June primary, avoiding a November run-off in the most populous council district in the city.
Dan Roth lost his post in the councilmember's office in November 2010 and then went to work for The Nature Conservancy in Sacramento as a media relations manager. Around December 2011 he moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where he started a new blog, AlexandriaBuzz.com, "Alexandria's new insanely local, community oriented blog reporting on the latest news around Alexandria." His sudden departure from Sacramento left many of his friends and family bewildered and worried about his well being.
