IRIS Teachable Moment —For more about this earthquake: http://www.iris.edu/hq/retm
Magnitude 7.3 Earthquake off the west coast of Northern Sumatra.
A major earthquake occurred approximately 420 km (261 miles) SW (215 degrees) of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia (location of 2004 devastating earthquake & tsunami).
No tsunami warning was issued.
Animation shows how the P, S, & surface seismic waves travel away from an earthquake to seismograph stations 60, 90, and 120° from the epicenter. There is a seismic shadow zone between 120° for direct P and S waves; only PP, SS, and surface waves reach that station in this simplified model.
