  • I think the announcer is actually the inner voice of the character in the commercial. He's happy and satisfied with where he is in his life, and so he rewarded himself with an Ambassador.

You're right about one thing: it wasn't a great way to sell a car. In fact, AMC switched to the hot ad agency Wells, Rich & Greene two years later in order to reach the youth market. Those spots fun and memorable, because AMC started making memorable cars.

  • a very underrated car unfortunatly the one I owned had electrical problems but when it ran it handeled well a rode better than any medium sised car I ever owned

  • Very exciting-looking car, shame about the commercial...

  • @RabidKoala Exactamente, amigo! Abernethy's plan went into full swing at the start of MY '67, and by the end of the year AMC was spewing red ink. They countered it in '68 by pushing the Rebel, American and then-new Javelin and AMX models; two years later they were profitable enough to buy Kaiser Jeep Corporation!

To my knowledge the 1967-74 Ambassadors, or for that matter the '58-61 models, never did as well as the '61-66 models that shared the Classic's wheelbase.

  • The announcer sounds like the gay moustache guy from Family Guy.

  • While I agree it is a nice and attractive car, it was a mistake. Ray Abernethy was trying to make AMC into another GM or Ford, and that was not going to happen. He took them out of the carefully selected niche markets and undid all the good that George Romney had done.

  • After all those years, and apart from the fact that i was born in 1980... THIS IS MY DREAM CAR!!!

  • one of the most underated cars of the 60;s a sweeeeeeeeeet ride then and now go amc .

  • I have just fallen in love with the 66 Ambassador. These cars look to be very ahead of their time in both styling and appointments.

  • Funny though, when I go to car shows, nobody has ever heard of AMC. many people, including some "car guys" ask me what I did to my GTO!! Others who know what it is remember all the myths and snide remarks from the Big 3, and repeat them to me ad nauseum. It sometimes means taking them for a "corrective drive" to demonstrate that the Rambler 327 was every bit a match for the Chevy 327, Ford 350, or Dodge 383 when it came to power and performance. Rear tire sometimes don't last all that long!

  • In my opinion, AMC marketed these cars totally wrong. My convertible will hold it's own in both looks and performance with anything built in the mid 60s, but AMC insisted in marketing to conservative old men and to families as a "safe. economical, "sensible" car, with built in 'value.'" The Rambler 327, with a few minor upgrades like a bigger carburetor and less restrictive exhaust, was and is a real screamer.
