On Independence Day, Quad-Citians who want freedom from big government held a rally in downtown Davenport.
"Our laws are being circumvented with congressional acts that don't match up with our Constitution," said Michael D. Elliott of Davenport.
Big government spending was the biggest complaint from these Quad-City rebels, about 100 strong. Many held signs and American flags. One sign read: "We'll keep the money, you keep the change" and "Obama is kicking us in the private sector."
Saturday's light but steady rain didn't dampen the crowd's enthusiasm as they made it plain they're angry with both major political parties.
"I'd like to see better representation than seeing Congress sending $500 million to Lebanon. We need that money here," said Randy Krohe of Davenport.
Many cars sped by, honking their approval of the gathering and the sentiment expressed by signs such as: "Tea'd - More Taxes Fewer Jobs."
Steve McCarthy of East Moline wanted to see a minimal government. "Health care, cap and trade, too many programs are being rammed down our throats and your congressman just blows you off," he said.
Elliott, a former candidate for Scott County auditor, organized the rally to build recognition for his group SuperLiberty.com. It's a local organization that, he said, supports people who feel disenfranchised and want to change local government from within the political system.
"This rally is also a recruitment opportunity to find people who'll run for office," Elliott said.
Chris Gordon of Moline agreed, saying, "People need to start getting into politics and see what's going on here and not taking it for granted that people will do what's in their best interests."
Elliott encouraged folks to go door-to-door to help educate neighbors and offer talking-point materials.
Other speakers warned of the lack of oversight and auditing of the Federal Reserve. They urged the assembled to stay on legislators to follow through by voting for House Bill 1207 for transparency of the Fed's spending.
The rally even drew a few visitors from Michigan who are in town visiting relatives. "We're just so dissatisfied with the direction of the country," said Mark Deppe. "We're a capitalistic country and we want to stay capitalist, not socialist," added his wife, Deborah.
SuperLiberty.com meets the first and third Saturday mornings of every month at 9:30 in the lower level of the downtown Davenport Library.
