@CubeFish1524 It's good for when you don't know how to pronounce a character. But yes, typing it out is definitely faster.

Jillian, as you write the word, four suggested words appear at the right side of the input window. If the word you want is at the top right, then just click the top right of the touch pad to select it, and so on.

PianoScience, as far as I know, this feature only works for MacBook Pro machine with the large trackpad.

First, you need to go the "Language & Text" settings under "System Preferences'. Make sure "Simplified Chinese" is one of the language in your list, and then under "Input Methods" for "Chinese Simplified", check on "Trackpad Writing".
Once you have this setup, you can get that little window either by typing "shift control space", or select it on the language settings at the menu bar.
