This is the site of the former rail road bridge. This line used to be part of the former ECMT to Tauraunga. The line was made redundant by the building of the 8+ km Kaimai Tunnel http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/nz-rail-geography/?

  • There was lots of trains - that was the problem, too many and it was replaced by the Kaimai Tunnel and this train line can see up to 20 container trains a day each way I believe. This old way was very slow and winding

  • I don't remember ever seeing a train on the line on the rare occasion I travelled that route (in the 1970s, possibly after the Kaimai tunnel opened), but I think my dad once commented about one coming out of the tunnel as he was driving past. It's been over 20 years since I've been in that part of the country.

  • Yeah - I remember crossing it a few times in a train and going through that tunnel - the scenery was awesome, Even that video's nearly 10 years old

  • I remember travelling by road past that bridge when the railway was still there.... I feel old!
