  • The song is just called 'Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr Hitlar', a lot of people think it was written in the 1930s or 40s but it wasn't actually written until the 1960s, specially for this programme. The singer was Bud Flanagan, who was a genuine star from the 1940s and came out of retirement just to record this, although sadly he dies before the tv show became a hit. It's available on various 'Flanagan and Allen' compilation cd's.

  • Also there is a story of a RAF plane that was shot down and as the pilot parachuted out of his plane the home guard thought we was a Nazi so they shot him several times only to find out he was an RAF pilot. The home guard didn't come anywhere near to being even slightly as deadly as the SAS.

  • Only boring people watch this show. And they always start with "He's dead. He's dead. He's dead. He's dead. He's getting on now."

  • How could anyone hate this tune.

  • R.I.P David Croft :'(

  • @robrawcliffe I see your point but in some cases they did, there was a division in the home guard that were highly trained, so secret in fact that once the German invasion begun, the commander of this division was to be killed because he knew too much. They were trained to kill with fists and everyday objects as well as a rifle. Although the home guard as a whole would not have been able to hold off the German invasion, merely make it annoying for them. :D

  • @oarfrost bleed to death trying to fight its way into London. Possibly most important of all, the HG were all volunteers. Most of Hitler's troops were conscripts.

  • @vorkutaman "they could have been a nuisance for a while but inevitably the battle hardened troops of the German army would have crushed them."

Dunno. The Home Guard's main problem was that initially they didn't have any decent equipment. That said Britain rearmed a lot faster than is generally assumed, many of the HG had been through WWI and were a lot more battle trained than the Germans and would have been fighting on interior lines. If the German army couldn't take Leningrad it would ...

  • @richintalent Not really. The closest one would be 'allo allo' a comedy set in occupied france.

  • hitler disliked

  • 1 PERSON DISLIKES IT, DON'T PANICK, DON'T PANICK MR MANERING!!!!!

  • @Boico101 they could have been a nuisance for a while but inevitably the battle hardened troops of the German army would have crushed them. I'm not denegrading the dad's army, they were brave old boys who were willing to fight for our island's sovereignty but let's not pretend they were a proper fighting force. They were mostly born in the 1800's and were no match for the fitter, younger and better trained third reich soldiers.
