Can peat balls reduce the pH in an aquarium? Our hundreds of satisfied customers would testify that they can.
We use them in our shop for our soft water tanks and they keep the water soft and at a steady pH6.5.
When they are squeezed, instant 'blackwater' extract is released into the aquarium which clouds it. The colour is quickly removed by the filter.
In our shop (and what we recommend) we use 1 ball per 50 litres and only squeeze them once a week (after a partial water change).
If they are squeezed more than once a week, or used 1 ball per less than 50 litres, the pH tends to drop to 6.
They last for many months in an aquarium and even when they have released all of their goodness, they continue to be useful as a 'sponge' in a similar way to ordinary aquarium peat which helps prevent the water conditions changing too quickly.
The tanks we use the balls in have a sand substrate and tests have shown that the pH is not as stable with gravel as a substrate as it can buffer the pH up when the peat balls are trying to buffer it down.
Many of the breeders who come into our shop use the peat balls to condition water for their killifish, corydoras and dwarf cichlids with great success.
A pack of 5 peat balls costs £4.99 and we post Worldwide (at cost).
Used in conjunction with alder cones (to protect eggs in hatching containers from fungal and bacterial attack) peat balls offer the missing link that breeders of soft water fish have been searching for for years. Soft water, lower pH and most importantly - happier fish which are more likely to breed.
