~How To Save A Life~ Chapter 8

Sorry I took so long... work :/

He laid the letter down gently on the table and asked for a clear sandwich bag. I got one from the pantry and gave it to him. Then, he carefully placed the letter inside. He looked up at me once he was done.

"We've already tainted the evidence. I'm just trying to keep it as clean as possible, until we get to the station."

I nodded and followed him out the door to another sleek, black sedan.

"Wait, let me lock up."

I ran back up my porch steps and locked the front door, then ran around back to check the backdoor. Once everything was dead-bolted up, I walked back to wear Dean stood.

"Everything good?" he asked.

"Yeah, let's go..."

We climbed into the sedan and rocketed out of my driveway so fast, my seat belt locked up on me. I thought that only happened when you slammed on the breaks, not the gas.

"Uh, Dean?"

He was completely focused on the road ahead, he didn't even hear me. So, I said it louder.

"Dean!"

He glanced at me quickly then back out the windshield. I began to wonder why he wasn't talking, so, I decided to make him.

"Why are we speeding?"

"I just want to get this evidence there quickly so this son of a bitch can rot in prison."

"Oh, ok..."

I didn't ask anything else after that. I just sat quietly as we sped towards the police station. I stared out the window to past the short time. When we got there, he pulled into the parking lot so fast, we fishtailed out and the seatbelt locked up again. He came to a hard stop in one of the parking spots right in front of the door.

"Rena?"

I looked to my left and saw Dean was already out of the car with the baggie in his hand. I fumbled with the belt until it unlocked, then followed him inside. We went down that familiar hallway to the lab and as I came through the door, I saw Taylor standing next a machine. He had a white lab coat on that was monogrammed with his last name on the left front pocket.

Dean walked over to him and gave him the letter. He removed it from the bag with the same caution Dean had when he placed it inside. Taylor examined it underneath the powerful LED lamp. Then, he placed it underneath a camera, and took a series of photos. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dean put on his own lab coat and join Taylor in the examination. He had a small kit and when he opened it, je removed a small brush and some black powder. He was dusting for fingerprints. He dusted both sides of the envelope and sighed.

"He left nothing on here."

Taylor frowned. "Well, he had to have placed it in the mailbox after the mail had come." He pointed at the right hand corner. "There's no stamp. What are the chances he left something behind on the mailbox itself?"

Dean shook his head. "Pretty slim."

Taylor grabbed a letter opener off the table. "Well, time to see what's inside." He scraped the sharp blade across the top of the envelope and removed the letter. He carefully unfolded it, and examined it under the LED.

Dean looked at Taylor. "You wanna do the honors?"

Taylor held up the letter and began reading:

"Hello Rena, long time no see. I hope you don't mind me sending this. I just had to let you know, I feel absolutely no remorse for what I did to your little brother. He had no business poking his little chest out where it didn't belong. That's why I put a bullet in it. As for you, you haven't changed much. You still work at that spa and still live in that same house. And you still cry yourself to sleep at night. But don't worry, you won't be in pain much longer, because I'm going to put you out of your misery."

I felt both of their eyes on me, but I didn't look up. I just stared at the floor, and let the tears pool in my eyes.

"Rena?" said Taylor.

"That bastard." I said through gritted teeth.

It was Dean's turn. "Don't worry, we're gonna hunt this guy down."
