Blue skies and sunshine greeted marchers, drivers, and the thousands of spectators who lined Main Street, Glover Avenue, and Queen Street on Monday, September 7, for the 48th Newtown Labor Day Parade. Joining retired State Representative Julia Wasserman, who was this year's Grand Marshal, to celebrate the town's "Passion For Newtown" were just over 100 community groups and organizations, schools, churches, volunteer first responders, and marching bands, including the traditional first band of the morning, Newtown High School's Marching Nighthawks.
Horses, dogs and llamas, strolling clowns, and shopping cart vendors all made their way along the route, all putting smiles on the faces of paradegoers of all ages.
The parade opened with two escort divisions, which offered the crowd the opportunity to see the 2009 Parade Committee responsible for coordinating this year's offering. The escort divisions also included all of the politicians, members of Newtown's Chamber of Commerce, and the parade judges, who had one of the toughest jobs of the day: Sifting through the countless people and visuals that streamed past them for two hours and making the choice of who took home this year's parade honors.
