My answer to a very popular viewer question:

Curbing play-biting/mouthing/nipping is the top priority for new puppy parents. Consistency & a positive, gentle approach allows us to quickly & effectively teach a puppy to make the right choices. The emphasis is on teaching the puppy the appropriate behaviors, instead of correcting them for making reasonable mistakes. Remember that puppies love to interact with their human(s) in all sorts of ways, and learn from every interaction that we have with them.

As an alternative to using aversive punishment, this multi-faceted approach allows us to creatively connect with our dogs by employing positive reinforcement and harnessing a relationship that is based on trust & respect.

If you like this video, please share it with anyone that you think might find it useful. If you have any other puppy questions/concerns, feel free to leave them in the comments & I will address them in the next puppy training video!

  • Great methods, but WOW, TOO MUCH TALKING!! Tab shows such understanding of dog learning, but little of people learning. Not much is retained by people from verbose lectures and so little demo and visuals. This was 5:59 minutes of constant talking. EDIT thyself! Learn about the powers of concision, summary, bullet points, and visuals.

  • @carmenbuit I'm sorry you didn't find this very useful. I have plenty of tutorials that demonstrate quite clearly the methods addressed in this video. A huge component of learning to train an animal is having the right attitude - which was the target of this particular video. In the meantime, I'd be happy for you to point me to a more useful free video on the subject.

  • Good video except for tugging suggestion. Playing tug of war increases aggression in dogs prone to it. In any physical contest with a large dog, the human will lose. Instead, give a toy substitute to encourage dog to teeth it, but do not tug on it with the dog. Tugging becomes a competition and allows to dog to think he could potentially "beat" you, which goes against alpha dog training methods.

  • @lyn0202 I don't believe in "alpha dog training methods", whatever that means. Playing tug with a dog can be a very powerful 'currency' which will ultimately be very powerful in training and building a bond with them. It takes only a few minutes to teach them to "let go" when you ask them to. I'm pretty sure I have a video on it somewhere.

  • @chupnehundibitch hey stranger ...try putting an '@' before sumone's name ...hmph dumbass hehehe...

  • I'll stick to the ouch technique, combined with walking away and leaving the dog. It teaches the dog that when it bites human skin the fun stops. It works fine on dogs I've known, who then know exactly how much pressure to put on my hand without hurting me. So now, they still get to mouth my hand, but never cause pain.

  • Any chance you can make a video on teaching a dog/puppy to stay out of certain areas? I'm getting a German Shorthaired Pointer in the beginning of the summer and I plan on taking him to the barn where I keep my horse, but would like to teach him how to stay out of the riding arena (for the safety of the dog and riders.)

  • hey tab289 ... i have a question

i have a 50 day old GSD .... at what age should i start obedience training ?

the best method as per you is positive reinforcement , i cannot properly imply that because whenever my pup smells food he gets over excited n starts barking and running around .. please help me out :)

  • I have read SO many books over the last 2 years and thought I was ready to start training. I'm glad that I found your videos. I just wish you were detailed. Did you learn yourself or did someone teach you? NOW to get a GSD and get going!

  • the problem with my puppy (a 3,5 month half labrador) is that she is biting my hand when i have the treat, and i cannot teach her to "leave it" or "off"
