Hi my name is Desiree Miller and I am a wheelchair basketball athlete at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. I am representing a program called "Cornerstones for Success", a non-profit organization sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Whitewater. We are submitting this video because we believe the Cornerstone program would be a perfect candidate for the Hartford Achievement Award. What the Cornerstones program focuses on is bringing disability awareness to a variety of students ranging from kindergarten all the way up to college age. Athletes, like myself, travel to different schools and share with the students our personal stories as well as demonstrate the sport of wheelchair basketball. We teach the students about overcoming obstacles, dealing with adversity, creating a community of their own, the importance of health and fitness, success in and out of the class room, and dispelling myths of what it means to live with a disability. The Hartford Achievement Award would help us reach our goal of purchasing four new program chairs which we would use to get the students more involved in our presentations. We would give the students a chance to really feel and understand what it means to be a wheelchair athlete. We hope to be considered for the Hartford Achievement Award so we can make the Cornerstones program even more successful and help reach more students from all over and from all walks of life.
