When Joe Hill of Brandon, Mississippi called in August to tell us that he was bidding on the first New Hampshire Moose Auction we were quite surprised. "New Hampshire is going to have a moose auction?" Joe was adamant that he was going to make a healthy bid on one of the five permits up for bid.
In the weeks following Joe was very excited to learn that his bid was good enough to earn him one of the five coveted permits. He was very anxious about his New Hampshire hunt. He left for the mid-west in September to take a Shiras moose, then he was going to drive to northern Maine to fill a moose tag, and after that finally drive to hunt with us in Northern New Hampshire. Whew! That's a lot of moose hunting.
Joe was successful in in filling all his tags and managed to save the best for last. Joe made it clear that the moose that he wanted was to be a quality moose.
Dave had just the moose for Joe. Two weeks and the day before the season "Joe's Moose" was scouted in a remote area of WMU C1. "It was apparent that this was the quality of moose that Joe wanted." Dave said.
Dave filmed this bull the day before the opening day and Keith had this bull nearly step on him earlier in the season. (See the 2009 Pre-Season Video for this.)
In the first few days of the hunt Guide Dave Noyes managed to get them in front of plenty of moose but, "Joe's Moose" managed to slip by them. They held off until the morning of the fifth day when Guide Keith Roberge spotted him in a clear-cut, not far from where Dave had filmed him days earlier.
"We managed to point Joe in the right direction and the monster bull moose stood there until it was time for Joe to pull the trigger." According to Dave. Joe made one well placed shot and dropped him the bull where he stood.
It wasn't until walking up to the bull that we realized that this bull was something special. His rack measured 57-inches at the widest point. We were all surprised to realize that he was the largest moose shot in the state. "We knew he was big but, we didn't know he was that big!" Dave said. Joe's moose weighed 940-pounds dressed and is the largest Canadian Moose he had ever taken and stands as the 2009 State Record for the largest bull in the New Hampshire Moose hunt.
Joe is planning to bid again in next years hunt. Good luck Joe!
