Why Shouldn't a World-Class College Big Band Get a Grammy? One O'Clock Lab Band

The One O'Clock Lab Band is the highest level of nine big bands of the Jazz Studies Division at the University of North Texas College of Music. "Lab 2011" documents the remarkable artistry of the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band led by Steve Weist. I kinda feel that a college big band should never have the option of winning a grammy. If your college big band is that good then they shouldn't be wasting their time in college. Quit school and move to NYC

This is the best big band anywhere around! And many of these musicians do get picked up by other bands and/or go to NY or LA. To say they are not deserving of a grammy because they are students is an extremely myopic point of view! And FYI, many of these students spent years on the road touring with big names BEFORE coming to UNT! The director, Steve Wiest, is a prime example.

Honestly, to me. Music is music is music. So what if they're a college? They're expressing their art, and very well might I add. It's almost like discrimination in my point of view, as far as them not getting one. But yeah, that's just me.
