This video from a CNN report on the Korean shipbuilding industry helps illustrate the importance of firm-level and industry-level analysis in studies of economic transformation. While few details are provided in the report itself, it is clear that a great deal--a huge amount--of technological progress took place in the Korean shipbuilding industry since its inception in the 1970s, which allowed Hyundai to become the world-leader in shipbuilding producing high-value added, technologically sophisticated ships. This belies simplistic "macro-level" analysis of the type represented in Krugman's "The Myth of Asia's Miracle."
