The Primettes (Supremes) singing " Pretty Baby"
Lead- Mary Wilson & Florence Ballard(Intro)
Background- Diana Ross, Betty Mcglown, & Florence Ballard

Lyrics:

Pretty, a pretty baby
Pretty, a pretty baby

I got a secret lover
And I don't want any other
He always makes me laugh
Always happy and never sad

He's mine, he's mine
My pretty baby, oh yeah
My pretty baby

I found love
My heart stands still
Every time he holds my hand
It gives me a thrill

He's mine, he's mine
My pretty baby, oh yeah
My pretty baby

Pretty, a pretty baby
Pretty, a pretty baby

I climb the mountains high
I still love rivers wide
I could do most anything
To be by your side

He's mine, he's mine
My pretty baby, oh yeah
My pretty baby

I tell my lover, I swim the river wide

  • Mary could actually sing as a teenager. It was just vicious of Gordy to tell her she couldn't sing and destroyed her confidence just to keep her from rocking the boat regarding group politics. Do you hear diana in the background? she sound like a cat that just had it's tail stepped on. If Motown could create a singer out of that, they could have created a great singer out of Mary as this song cleary shows she could have been a great singer.

  • @carolinaguy321

    yeh i kno rite!

did you kno that mary was suppose to lead "Where Did Our Love Go"

  • @suedemiddleton Yeah. And Where did our love go would have been right up Mary's alley. She had that sultry alto that would have given just as much silky-ness that Diana gave it. I've seen interviews where Brian Holland says Diana sang the song the way she did as a part of protesting having to sing the song becuase she hated it. What Diana achieve on that song by mistake, is something Mary could have done naturally.

  • @carolinaguy321

    Yeh I sure wuld've.

HdH wanted Mary's Contralto on Where Did Our Love Go becuz it sounded smoother:) diana Got Lucky!

  • Mary was actually the first lead singer and she could turn heads! I've always loved Mary and always will. Flo, on the other hand, showed no mercy with Sam Cooke's "Good News". All three of these ladies were lead singers, even while in the background. One of Diana's greatest early vocals for me was "Your Heart Belongs To Me". Brian Holland later used her lower register for "Where Did Our Love Go", which was why I didn't recognize them right away on that one.

  • Diana wasn't the best singer of the Supremes but she had a unique sound that made them sound...well, unique.

  • @winsome1235 Sheez! Imagine what a guy like you or Berry Gordy would've done with En Vogue.

  • @Modelt5000 It's a tough business, unfortunately, that's all it is ,is a business can be lucrative, but noone really cares unless you got something they want. Back then Berry felt he was doing them a favor. He didn't care about their talents and what they bought 2 M'Town,it was about BUSINESS him making money. All of the talent was young & hungry 4 success. He singed them used & controlled them & would'nt let them voice their opinions, when they did, they were kicked 2 the CURB!! That"s sad

  • @Modelt5000 It was very unfair for other artists that did write songs & not getting their royalties. It was like that for a long time until artists started wising up. I started a female group back in the nineties.I Groom ,Developed, rehearsed,& taught them, suplied tranportation & outfits. Had 2 keep recording songs on them 2 get a lead out of them for the sound I wanted 2 acheive. We met all kind of people & most of them were men, cut throats & backstabbers trying 2 steal the girls. cont...

  • Aaah they were all so cute!! I love myself some SUPREMES ! All 3 of them. I still listen to them, Original Temps, Miracles,Vandellas and THE 4Tops, 2day on my ipod and cds in my car.. Love MOTOWN !! Things wasn't perfect back then, the kids were young,so was Motown. They all were just trying 2 make it in the business and believe me it just business, might not be fair all the tim.Things a lil' different now, you can write and produce your career 2 the top. That wasn't the case back then. cont

  • Huge Flo fan speaking here, but Mary tore through this song. This is true God given talent. They sound like mature women, not little girls that just started a group. To think Mary was only 14, and Flo was 14 maybe 15. They sound far more superior than any mature artist right now. Thanks for posting this precious gem, especially the rare candid photos of them as young teens. Flo was such a cutie pie.

  • Without Diana the Supremes would have been just another group. Diana was the catalyst for their success. She was who I noticed first and what made me pick up the "Where Did Our Love Go" album. Yes she outshone the others and for that she has taken a lot of heat but she was great.

  • A great song! With Mary on lead.
