Acorn to Oak seedling filmed over a period of 8 months.
Filmed by Neil Bromhall for http://www.rightplants4me.co.uk
The acorn was collected in September and filmed in an underground set using a 2 hour interval between exposures.
The acorn split soon after it was planted and continued to split during the winter months. In January the first sign of root growing could be seen followed in February by the emergence of shoot.
In March the shoot broke through the soil surface.
The leaves formed between March and April.
This is an example of hypogeal germination.
Filmed on Nikon D300. 55mm macro nikkor lens and studio flash with growlight for top shot.
This sequence accompanies my interactive plant identification website www.rightplants4me.co.uk

  • Quick question. We have just planted acorns and would like to know how long in took your acorn to germinate. Great job on the studio. Looked very realistic.

  • @andreizuerch Hi. This sequence took 8 months to film. I didn't heat the set so I imagine it will take much the same time to germinate in the wild. The oak seedling is still growing in my garden now and is about 30cm tall. Best wishes

  • @icantpaintcom Hi There. I built a set in my studio to look like a woodland floor. There's a tiny hint of blue in the background to look like a blue sky. I'm delighted that you thought it was filmed on location as it is supposed to look like it's filmed outside. Best wishes

  • Unreal.

  • Amazing and beautiful to see an Oak tree being born!

  • It is cool how the leaves flap up and down.

  • @fenrirgg Nice idea but I'm too old to film a pecan for 60 years.

  • @1ClaudiaK Thank you. Best wishes

  • @378235 Hi, The sequences are filmed in my studio where I can control the growing conditions. I use flash to get an even exposure. For the woodland scene I use a growlight to encourage and enable the seedling to grow plus a flash for exposures. I hope this helps

    best wishes
