Verdi's Rigoletto is one of the best-known of all great chorus operas. The Royal Opera's revival brings it back with a wonderful international cast under a renowned conductor of Italian opera, Daniel Oren.
This video clip offers an enticing hint of the entire production. Alvarez is in superb voice, with thrilling top notes. Schafer may look like a waif-wannabe, but her stellar singing combined with her characteristic depth of character gives her high marks. While Gavanelli is no Leonard Warren vocally, he manages to stir up a modicum of emotion in his uneven portrayal. Pet peeve: why do modern directors have to fill every second with movement? Sometimes stillness speaks volumes.
seeing this soon :)
