The boys have got an interesting theme in this week's episode: films from the past that set a prescient tone for today's socio-political climate. MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW parallels today's concern with social security and Medicare, BLACK LEGION attacks the notion of how corporate concerns capitalize on hate and divisiveness, ADVISE AND CONSENT deals with the machinations of back room politics and, finally, BOB ROBERTS takes a satirical view on political idolatry. Discuss, debate or just drink up and enjoy.

  • what edwin said about tim ribins watch the scene and saying "this is really clever" is the problem i have with a lot of liberal film. There is a level of smugness from the makers, that make it annoying to watch. Even if you agree with what the film is saying.

  • @badhead It's also a trademark of '90s indie filmmaking. Bcomes annoying quickly. That's one reason why some actors shouldn't direct themselves in movies. In fact, I don't like directors casting themselves in major parts because it's usually a sign of a vanity project. Clint Eastwood is the only one I think has been able to pull it off constantly. Cassavettes only took small parts in his films because he couldn't afford to pay someone. That is the only time a director should act in his films.

  • I remember watching Advice and Consent when i was a little kid on the peruvian TV. i was so little that my father had to explain to me about the gay subplot. I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for years. until now: Good you make an episode out of the so called "genre movies". Greetings from Sweden!

  • @guely55 I was surprised how well the gay subplot was handled for a film of that era.

  • I'll definitely check out those titles. It's nice to see some reviews of older films. My only complaint is that often when you guys do review classic movies you express surprise at how forward-thinking they are 'for the time'. There's plenty of sophistocated stuff from the olden days, and Hollywood has always been pretty political. Anyway I'm not a left-wing type but the movies you've reviewed do sound good.

  • @WalterLiddy We try to pick films that are ahead of their time. There's a lot of films that are dated, but the whole point of this show was to discuss history repeating itself.

  • It kinda ticks me off when a supposed 'film geek' says he or she doesn't like black and white movies. A story is a story...anyway, great episode as always, CANT wait for the next one!

  • @colemartinst123 It was just uploaded not even 5 minutes ago. How do you know this is a good episode? :)

  • Great show guys. Definitely ' The Cinefiles' strong suit is discussing less well known films, or films and movie-makers that aren't entirely mainstream. Also, surely the recent documentary on Roger Corman could be a starting point for your hoped for episode about him. Thanks for another year of interesting, knowledgeable and humorous discussion of movies.

  • @MCFoltz If you google " great conservative film" (or any similar variation) you'll find articles were conservatives try to claim movies like 12 Angry Men, It’s a Wonderful Life, Ghost Busters, Network (seriously) etc. There's even a lot of people that claim David Lynch films are conservative.

So, to answer your question. No, their are no intelligent conservative films, OR any intelligent conservative movie goers.

  • @cinefiles thank you for replying to my comment i appreciate it, glad to hear you may do a show on Robert Redford one day i look forward to it. I am assuming that it was Edwin that replied back to my comment anyway take it easy you guys look forward to the next show and hopefully many more

  • @Fakieflps Please watch these films. B/W adds so much, especially those old Twilight Zone episodes. I can't imagine them working as well in color. Can you?

  • That's a good idea. Be sure to go over to the facebook page and recommend it there.

  • @natewheatshelf Many thanks for watching.

  • @redbaron932 We usually stick to films by directors or certain topics, but perhaps, we could one discuss the films Redford directed.
